Where JWD fits in the team
Complex scenic lighting work often lives between traditional scopes. It may start as a creative idea, become part of the scenic design, pass through fabrication, and ultimately need to function as a reliable lighting system in the real world.
JWD fits in that middle space.
We can support the project as an Embedded Lighting Design & Engineering Partner, working early with creative and technical stakeholders to shape how lighting, power, control, access, service, and documentation are integrated into the scenic design.
We can also support the project as a Fabricator-Side Scenic Electrics Partner, helping shops translate design intent into buildable drawings, wiring layouts, control documentation, BOMs, test plans, and coordinated technical details.
In either role, JWD helps align the creative vision with the realities of fabrication and delivery — so the lighting is not just designed, but understood, built, tested, and ready to work.
Our Services
1
Embedded Lighting Design & Engineering Partner
When lighting is built into the scenery itself, it becomes part of the physical environment — not just something aimed at it.
In this role, JWD works early with the creative team, production team, and technical stakeholders to help shape the embedded lighting approach before major fabrication decisions are locked in. We help define how the lighting system should live inside the scenic form, how it will be controlled, accessed, powered, serviced, documented, and ultimately delivered.
This is especially valuable when the project includes pixel-controlled elements, integrated LED systems, illuminated scenic objects, practicals, architectural scenic lighting, or custom effects where design intent and fabrication method need to develop together.
JWD helps answer questions like:
How should the lighting be integrated into the scenic design?
What needs to be decided before fabrication begins?
Where are the risks in power, control, access, heat, service, or installation?
What information does the fabricator need in order to build it correctly?
How do we protect the creative intent through the technical process?
2
Fabricator-Side Scenic Electrics Partner
JWD can also work directly with scenic fabricators as a technical partner focused on execution.
In this role, we help translate the creative and production requirements into shop-ready scenic electrics documentation, layouts, details, wiring plans, control diagrams, BOMs, test plans, and support materials. We work with the fabricator’s build methodology rather than around it, helping the electrics become a coordinated part of the scenery instead of a separate layer added too late.
This support can be especially useful when a shop has the fabrication capacity but needs additional scenic electrics engineering, drafting, pixel mapping, documentation, or technical coordination bandwidth.
JWD helps fabricators with:
Lighting and scenic electrics layouts
Power, data, and control planning
Fixture, LED, and pixel integration
Shop-ready drawings and details
BOMs, schedules, and supporting documentation
Bench testing and readiness support
Coordination with designers, vendors, and production electricians
