I’m Jay Woods, a lighting designer and technical design partner. My work connects the emotion of a creative idea with the practical detail that brings it to life—across Broadway, broadcast, themed entertainment, dance, and live concert touring.
I began as a lighting designer, spending the first 15 years of my career developing that craft. Integrating light into complex scenic environments led me into engineering and technical design. Today, the two disciplines inform everything I do: a designer’s understanding of storytelling, supported by a detailed knowledge of how things are built.
I work closely with creative teams, fabricators, and production crews to protect design intent through real-world constraints. That can mean shaping a moment on stage, planning concealed lighting and control systems, or producing clear documentation that supports a project throughout its service life.
Trust, thoughtful collaboration, and ownership are central to my approach. Whether the work is an intimate dance piece or an environment spanning acres, I stay engaged from the first conversation through the challenges of bringing it to life.

JWD is an independent design and engineering practice led by Jay Woods. Clients work directly with Jay, whose creative involvement and technical oversight provide continuity from the first conversation through delivery.
For projects requiring additional capacity or specialized expertise, Jay assembles a team of trusted independent collaborators and partner companies around the scope of the work. On larger productions, designated team leads coordinate directly with their counterparts, keeping communication clear and decisions moving while Jay remains the primary client contact.
The result is a flexible practice with personal accountability: focused expertise for a specific challenge, or a coordinated team for a larger undertaking.
